Fuel Your Research: Carl H. Pforzheimer, Jr. Research Grants

The Keats-Shelley Association is accepting applications for our prestigious Carl H. Pforzheimer, Jr. Research Grants, and the deadline is approaching! These grants fund essential research expenses—archival visits, manuscript consultations, and other investigative work that brings historical materials to light. For those planning work at the British Library, recipients may also qualify for additional support through the American Trust for the British Library Research Fellowship.

Beyond Traditional Boundaries

We especially welcome projects that push conventional definitions of Romantic studies. Whether your work engages with race, empire, gender, class, or global Romanticisms, we seek research that illuminates new dimensions of the Romantic era. Projects need not focus exclusively on Keats and the Shelleys—we encourage the full spectrum of Romantic-era inquiry that aligns with the scholarly vision of The Keats-Shelley Journal.

Who Can Apply

The grants are designed to support scholars at crucial early-career stages:

  • Advanced graduate students

  • Untenured faculty

  • Independent scholars working outside the academy

A Legacy of Supporting Scholarship

Named in honor of Carl H. Pforzheimer, Jr. (1907-1996), an advocate and most generous benefactor of our Association, these grants continue a distinguished tradition supporting early 19th-century English literature scholarship. Since 2000, the Pforzheimer Grants have enabled scholars to conduct groundbreaking archival research across the globe, from Ghana and Jamaica to Spain and the United Kingdom.

Ready to Apply?

Visit our Awards page for full details. Your complete application should include a project description (no more than three pages), CV, relevant bibliography, and two reference letters sent directly to KSAA.Pforzheimer@gmail.com.

Celebrating Past Recipients

Each year we're inspired by the diverse and innovative projects our Pforzheimer Grant recipients pursue. This past December’s reports from our winners detail fascinating discoveries from archives worldwide and demonstrate the vital role these grants play in advancing Romantic studies. We encourage you to explore the work of our previous recipients to see the remarkable range of scholarship these grants have supported.

The Pforzheimer Grants represent more than funding—they're an investment in the future of Romantic studies and the scholars who will shape our field's next chapter. We look forward to learning about your research and supporting your scholarly journey.
